The title of Tony’s talk is " Laudato Si’ and the Moral Responsibility to protect our Common Home”.
In 2015, Pope Francis issued Laudato Si, one of the most important documents in the history of Catholic social thought. In this encyclical, he puts forward the idea of integral ecology, which suggests that how we treat creation affects how we treat our fellow human beings.
Accordingly, he identifies a related environmental and social crisis, which is degrading our common home and undermining our common humanity. In turn, he traces the root of this problem to a disordered mentality of self-centeredness, self-absorption, and instant gratification. This solution is to reconnect with each other and with creation, and this in turn calls for a different type of progress - one less reliant on limitless economic growth and the accumulation of resources and more on integral and sustainable development. This has implications for everyone - the international community, domestic politics, businesses, civil society, and churches too.
