Presentation of the Sunrise Movement, Ann Arbor Hub, Monday, November 13, 6:30 PM, Siena Heights University, Rueckert Auditorium
About the Sunrise Movement
From Wikipedia: Sunrise Movement is an American 501(c)(4) political action organization that advocates political action on climate change. When launched in 2017, the movement's goal was to elect proponents of renewable energy in the 2018 midterm elections, first in the Democratic primaries and then in the general election held on November 6, 2018. Since the midterm elections, the movement has been working towards shifting the Overton window on climate policy to center the environmental program known as the Green New Deal. Together with Justice Democrats and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the group organized a sit-in in the office of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, which brought Sunrise its first significant press coverage. Sunrise organized a similar event in February 2019, bringing a group of young people to confront Senator Dianne Feinstein in her office. Since the sit-in, the movement has been attracting media attention with their direct actions, such as the Wide Awake series of actions in the summer of 2020. continued on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunrise_Movement About the presenters Sunrise Ann Arbor is the Ann Arbor, Michigan hub of the Sunrise Movement, a national youth movement organizing for the end of fossil fuels and a just and sustainable future. The hub has currently about 20 active members. On a national level, the Sunrise Movement campaigns for the Green New Deal and has helped to put this bold legislation on the national agenda. On a local level, Sunrise hubs around the country are responsible for numerous environmental victories, such as fossil fuel divestment campaigns, public transit expansion, and local Green New Deal programs. Sunrise Ann Arbor burst onto the scene in 2019 with a campaign to push Congresswoman Debbie Dingell to co-sponsor the Green New Deal. Since then, the hub has been involved in various environmental justice projects. Sunrise Ann Arbor was involved in a Concert to Shut Down Line 5, where they fundraised for Camp Pipe Out, a Line 5 protest, and the Thečhíȟila Collective, an indigenous mutual aid group. The group was also protesting against the former CEO of DTE, who was invited to the University of Michigan to talk about "fighting at the front lines of the climate crisis" despite being a major polluter. Most recently, the Ann Arbor hub spearheaded the coalition to get Lansing insurance company Accident Fund to cut ties with the racist and ecologically devastating Cop City development in Atlanta, a campaign which is ongoing at the time of writing. In their other lives, Rowan is a musician and Alyssa is a Master of Social Work student. Rowan and Alyssa’s presentation will touch on the history of the Sunrise Movement and Sunrise Ann Arbor and will particularly focus on their current Stop Cop City campaign targeting the insurance company Accident Fund. They will share what they’ve learned from this campaign and encourage students to find ways to turn their environmental anxiety into meaningful action.
